Glass Waste

Winchesters and Other Brown Glass Bottles

Winchesters and other brown bottles can be recycled following the steps below:

  • Remove plastic cap. The cap can be placed in the laboratory waste bins (or dry mixed recycling bins)
  • The bottle must be emptied of its contents, washed thoroughly with water and dried
  • It is emphasised that Winchesters must be completely free of solvent before disposal
  • Bottles from Fischer, Sigma-Aldrich and Honeywell are placed in the green wheelie bins provided
  • Bottles from VWR are placed into the metal cage provided. Bottles from VWR are collected on a monthly basis and returned to the supplier for reuse.

Laboratory Glassware

All other glass waste (pasteur pipettes, glass sample vials, broken glassware) should be cleaned (removing any research chemicals) and placed in a glass bin shown below. Care should be taken to ensure glass bins are not overfilled.

Once a glass bin is full, the lid should be secured with parcel tape and placed in the commercial waste skip in the general waste store. New glass bins are available at Purdie stores.
