Dry Mixed Recycling / Commercial Waste

Wheelie bins for dry mixed recycling can be used to dispose of:

  • Waste paper
  • Empty, clean plastic containers including reagent containers that have been thoroughly cleaned and labels defaced (e.g. 5 L plastic acetone bottles)
  • Bubble wrap / plastic wrapping
  • Drinks bottles / crisp packets / sweet wrappers

All other general waste items can be placed into commercial waste wheelie bins provided.

Cardboard and Polystyrene

Placing cardboard and polystyrene in laboratory bins should be avoided whenever possible. Instead, these should be placed in the appropriate bins found in the general waste store. Cardboard boxes should be broken down (flattened) to prevent the cardboard bins becoming unnecessarily overfilled.

Scrap Metal Waste

The scrap metal bin can be used to dispose of waste metal generated through research activities. Scrap metal waste includes:

  • Metal cans used to transport chemical reagents
  • Decontaminated wire / pipe from experimental apparatus
  • Metal shelving brackets
  • Nuts and Bolts

It is emphasised that metal contaminated with research chemicals must not be placed directly into the scrap metal bin. Such items should be decontaminated to make the waste safe before disposal.
